It started out a regular Sunday morning. An ordinary walk on a familiar road. It ended up the most powerful day in human history! An explosion rocked a tomb. A previously invincible power – the power of death – was destroyed. Jesus of Nazareth rose from the dead. He crushed death! He showed up, alive and in person, on the road.

History was changed. Eternity was changed. The lives of two travelers were changed. Cleopas and his friend were taking an ordinary walk to the nearby village of Emmaus. Their lives would never be the same. A third companion joined them on the road. He informed the two about what had happened earlier that morning. The rumored resurrection of Jesus had been foretold by the prophets. Then he explained to them what all the Hebrew Scriptures revealed about the Messiah. Starting with Genesis. What?! The Messiah in Genesis?

Later, the two disciples’ minds were blown when they realized that their Discipler, disguised on the road, was none other than the death-conqueror. The risen Lord Jesus himself! Their hearts burned within them (Luke 24:32).

I’m fascinated to think about what Jesus told the two travelers. What he said about himself in Genesis. I wish they had taken notes. I wish we had a New Testament book called Cleopus. This guidebook will explore some of the things that Jesus may have said to his friends. More important, though, I’d like to stir you beyond the revelation to the Revealer. I’d like to encourage you to go for a walk. To have your own personal encounter with the risen Lord Jesus. If you do, your heart will burn with fire. 
 
My hope, then, is to kindle some fires in the hearts of Christ-followers for our risen Discipler.

I’ve designed the manual by what it means to be an apprentice of Jesus. First and foremost, it means giving him our first love. Jesus is the personification of love. Our Bridegroom. He values our devoted service, our sound doctrine, our enduring faith through hardships. But just like in a marriage, what our Lover really desires, above all else, is our first love (Revelation 2:1-4).
 
The design is also “life on life.” Jesus models discipleship in its most effective form, incarnation.  Thirdly, apprenticeship means putting into practice Jesus’ teaching. Obeying our Lord’s commands is essential for the growth that he desires in his dearly loved sons and daughters. Finally, the Holy Spirit is our vital companion. When our risen Savior ascended to heaven, he replaced himself with another Master Discipler to walk with us. The indwelling Holy Spirit mentors and strengthens us on the road of discipleship.
 
With this in mind, let’s meet Jesus in Genesis.
